Kindergarten Workshop: Getting Ready for Kindergarten

Kindergarten is around the corner, and it's time to prepare your child for the big day.

Three Aurora Public Schools Early Childhood Education teachers will discuss expectations for Kindergarten in Aurora Public Schools and provide an overview of the Kindergarten Curriculum.

When: Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Where: Child Development Center, 1420 Laredo Street, Aurora, CO. 80011

Time: 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Pizza and drinks will be provided from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Childcare for children 2-7 years old will be available.

Screening procedures for the Colorado Preschool Program are a 3-step process; Screening, Registration and Enrollment. Note: The Colorado Preschool Program does have limited availability. Participation in this 3-step process does not guarantee placement. For additional questions, please call our office at the Early Childhood Education Department at 303-364-9371.

*Please note -

Children must be 3 0r 4 years old 0n or before Oct. 1, 2010 to be eligible for the Fall preschool program.

Child's Birth Certificate

Immunization Record (state required)

If you own your home: Warranty Deed, current property tax bill, or current and complete Xcel, Water or Cable bill

If you rent: a current signed lease

If you live with another family: please bring a notarized letter from the owner of the home stating that you live with them, the length of time that you will be living there and their signed lease if they rent or their Xcel bill if they own their home.

APS is partnering with the Tri-County Health Department to offer immunizations to targeted groups who are considered at high risk for H1N1 influenza. The targeted groups are:

children and young adults from 6 months to 24 years of age
pregnant women
adults who care for infants less than 6 months old
health care workers
adults from 25 to 64 years of age who have chronic health conditions like asthma or diabetes

This vaccine will be available at no charge to those who are in the targeted groups attending a school sponsored clinic. Identification or proof of chronic disease will not be required. Written consent from a parent or legal guardian will be required for anyone under 18 years of age. Children who are 10 and under will need to have two injections at least 28 days apart. This vaccine protects against H1N1 influenza only, not seasonal flu.

If you are among the high risk groups, or have children or other family members who are considered to be at high risk for H1N1 influenza, I encourage you to participate in this public health event.

We will continue to monitor and track absence rates due to flu-like symptoms. Please continue to adhere to previously shared recommendations to prevent the spread of illness. For further information, including an FAQ, visit the APS Web site at

2009-2010 Preschool Entry Assesement

Preschool students attending the 2009-2010 school year will receive a letter from the Early Childhood Education Department regarding their entry assesement. These assesements will take place in your child’s classroom with your child’s teacher. The assesements will be given during the week of August 10th-14th.

APS Vision: Graduate every student with the choice to attend college without remediation.

Mission Statement: Ensure that all preschool students will transition into kindergarten with the experiences and skills necessary to reach high levels of learning throughout their academic career. The ECE department will provide support to the APS vista 2010 mission: "Teach every student the knowledge, skills and values necessary to enter college or a career and become a contributing member of society who flourishes in a diverse, dynamic world." The opportunites for early learning provide a strong foundation that will help to ensure academic success.

*Current preschool students advancing to kindergarten in August 2010, do not need to re-register at the Centralized Admissions. Information regarding kindergarten enrollment will be sent via US Mail in April 2010.

School Hours: M - F, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Colorado Preschool Program: classrooms are in session Tuesday - Friday. Hours vary per class. No school on Mondays. Classroom teachers are using the Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum for Ages 3-5. Preschool Sessions are 2 hours, 45 minutes a day (4 days per week). If your child is going to be absent or late, please call our office at 303-363-0484.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten

The Early Childhood Education Department is offering parents of preschoolers an informative evening entitled, Getting Ready for Kindergarten. Parents will learn about Kindergarten in Aurora Public Schools and the procedures for registration. The event will be held at each of the two Aurora Public Schools Child Development Centers. The two dates for the Getting Ready for Kindergarten event are March 23 and 24, 2009. The March 23^rd event will be held at the Jamaica Child Development Center, 800 Jamaica Street in Aurora. The event is scheduled 5:30-7:30. The second event is scheduled March 24, 2009, 5:30-7:30 at the Child Development Center, 1420 Laredo Street in Aurora. The time for this event is 5:30 -7:30. Dinner and onsite childcare will be provided for children ages 2-7 on both dates. This is a free event and each child will receive a free book. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the location where parents want to attend. Reservations for the March 23^rd event at the Jamaica Child Development Center can be made by calling Fany Estrada at 303-364-8126 ext. 21835. Reservations for the March 24^th event can be made by calling Norma Hernandez at 303-364-9371 ext. 21524. The deadline for reservations at both locations is March 19, 2009.
