Unified Improvement Plan

Every school in the state of Colorado has been charged with developing a Unified Improvement Plan. The plan is to identify areas of improvement and develop strategies for growth. The entire LCDC staff has contributed to the development of our Unified Improvement Plan. The process began by looking at our school’s data, identifying belief statements and planning action steps to improve our instruction. The next step is to share it with our families. At our Parent Coffee on January 25, 2012 we presented our Unified Improvement Plan and provided time for families to ask questions. Family Reading Program


Last school year, our preschool teachers participated in extensive professional development with Marilyn Duncan, author of

The Kindergarten Book. Her research showed that preschool-age children, who are read to and are exposed to literacy at an early age, do better in school and become better learners.

Last year we had a total of over 5,000 books read by our families and students. Our goal this year, is to continue to implement and support a Family Reading Program within our school and partner with families to reach a minimum of 1,000 books read by or to every preschooler before they transition to Kindergarten.

Our school is going to create a reading caterpillar that will extend from one end of the building to the other. The caterpillar’s body parts will represent 10 books read by or to each student. Every time a student reads or is read a total of 10 books, the caterpillar with gain a new body piece.

Please use the attached reading chart to track the books you are reading with your child. Return the form to the classroom teacher with your signature when you have 10 books read.
