Thank you for your continued support!

April is College and Career Success Month in APS!

April is College and Career Success Month in APS!

It is never too early for students to start planning for college and career success!

That is the message Aurora Public Schools is spreading this April in celebration of College and Career Success Month. Staff members across the district are hosting a variety of events that encourage students to prepare for their futures. From career fairs to college tours, an all-girl technology camp, SAT/ACT preparation and more, students are engaging in valuable experiences.

As part of our strategic plan, APS 2020: Shaping the Future, every APS student starting in kindergarten develops a plan for his or her future. These plans will evolve as they move through grade levels. Students’ plans should reflect their interests and help them regularly set and meet goals.

We know that parents are our students' first teachers and play a vital role in influencing their futures. It is never too early to start talking to children about their dreams, goals and careers that they are interested in learning more about. Below are a few suggestions to begin these conversations:

  • Talk to your children...and talk to them often. Have open and honest conversations with your students about their hopes, passions, dreams and plans. Work together to set goals and to obtain the resources and help that you need.
  • Share your own stories with them about your career journey. Explain your process--the ups, downs and everything in between. Our students learn from our successes and our mistakes.
  • Help your children explore careers that align with their goals. Seek mentorships from trusted family members, friends or colleagues who are in your child’s field of interest.
  • Go on "family field trips." Take the time to explore local colleges and universities in your area. Going on a road trip? Make some quick stops to tour campuses along the way.

Please know the school and counseling support staff at your children's schools are there to help you and your family navigate through this process.
